There’s been pretty good buzz for “The New American Workplace,” by James O’Toole and Edward Lawler (click here to go to Amazon to get it) in the business community, I think. It’s a follow-up to what I think is the well known “Work in America” study done during the Nixon administration (before my time, I’m taking their word for it).
I found it worthwhile for a lot of reasons. First, it provided a pretty high level overview of the working environment in America. A lot of what’s out there now is about managing or leading within a company. I think this is about society, with a capital S. Second, for people who haven’t been in employed community for a terribly long time, it’s good to recognize what is new about the workplace. The disappearance of manufacturing jobs, the relative equality of women in the workplace, and the globalization of our work are pretty recent phenomena. We need to take stock of these changes and figure out how to integrate them into our society.
