This really isn’t the kind of review that is designed to help you decide whether to iLife ‘06. Of course you are going to buy it! This is more about my impressions of the software, and more specifically iMovieHD 6.0, which is what I have used the most. I have a specific use of iMovie, and that is to create fun slide shows of pictures from my travels. I like this approach as opposed to the Web photo thing because you can manage the experience and not turn people off with hundreds of boring pictures. So let’s get into it, shall we?
Overall Experience: iMovie just gets better and better. The rendering goes pretty smoothly and it’s easy to figure out how to use stuff. One piece of wierdness, though. How do you know what kind of project you really want when you create a new one? You get asked whether you want DV or MPEG 4 and the like. It’s this simple question that doesn’t provide a clue as to what the impact is. On my last project, I tried it both ways, and found that the quality of the MPEG 4 selection was inferior to the DV selection. So why select that - just go DV and then sample as you please when you go to distribute, right? Apple’s help doesn’t give much guidance on this.
No Ken Burns is the New Ken Burns: So, The era of Ken Burns is over. It was over, in like 2004, when it first came out. Just like how crazy fonts went out of style in 1984. Once everyone does it, it’s not special.
