I probably should have read this before I saw the movie. It’s every bit as good as everyone says it is. At the same time, I am not sure I would have known if I read it in 1997 if I would have thought it would have made such a good movie or been such a timeless story. Kind of hard to explain - this sort of thing is not uncommon in the gay world. I suppose that Ms. Proulx’s contribution is to make it so…real for the audience.
