I wasn’t imagining it, there is a bug (or feature?) that causes Microsoft Word 2004 to appear to hang when launching a document from within Entourage. It has to do with the Microsoft Office Database Daemon, which runs on the Mac and uses up all the CPU when opening a Word document from within Entourage. Apparently, it is copying all of the contacts from Entourage into Word AutoText. By the way, who even uses this feature :). Office 2004 is a nice piece of software by the way.

[Update:] Is it really fixed?

Weak Link in Microsoft Office

And here’s the macro that fixes it all…(anyone have any luck with it?)

Sub DelContacts()

‘ Removes Contacts from Normal Template
‘ Macro written July 4 2002 by John McGhie

Dim anAutoText As AutoTextEntry
Dim i As Integer

For Each anAutoText In Application.NormalTemplate.AutoTextEntries
If Left(anAutoText.Value, 9) = “* CONTACT” Then
anAutoText.Delete
i = i + 1
End If
Next anAutoText

StatusBar = Str(i) & ” contacts deleted”

End Sub
