I just learned the news that Eudora, once the coolest e-mail client around, is being folded as a standalone product and united with the Thunderbird code base, to create “Penelope.”

I started using Eudora version 1.3SFU (developed at Simon Fraser University) a long time ago, and I think I stopped using it around version 4 or version 5-ish. It was replaced in my world with a Microsoft e-mail client, which brought unified calendaring, and ultimately connectivity to Microsoft Exchange. That was / is pretty hard to beat, interface or not.

The cool thing about Eudora was that it was pure e-mail, fast and simple. I don’t know if its interface would be to my liking today, but then again, it’s been awhile since I visited it. I think at one point way back when I actually received a message from Steve Dorner about a questionI had regarding the software. In those days, people had time to answer questions about how a piece of software worked (Well, I still think they do if they make time). I thought that was a cool thing.

So, so long, and best to you in your new incarnation (can Penelope by any chance reverse engineer a connection to Microsoft Exchange? Just asking…)

Expect either changes or further anti-trust action against Microsoft for the Exchange issue. The fact that third parties are unable to write exchange clients represents one of the monopolies Microsoft still holds. Nobody ever got fired for buying Microsoft, but when a company decides to use Exchange they’re essentially committing themselves to buy millions in MS software. Because you can’t buy Outlook without also buying Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. And you can’t use Exchange without Outlook. And since these programs all purposely run best on Windows, well… you get the idea.

Ted - 15 Oct - 7:35 am,

You really think so? I think there’s still healthy competition in the e-mail space with Lotus Notes still out there, and some robust UNIX options.

I know that in enterprises it’s hard not to choose one of those two, but it’s not too late to write an enterprise e-mail system that would work.

Last point I would make is that Entourage for Mac in my opinion actually runs better as an e-mail client than Outlook for PC does - more flexible, faster, albeit missing some features (and who cares about the ones they are missing anyway).

Ted - 15 Oct - 8:27 am,

Hey, I just stumbled across this at the Microsoft Mac BU Blog, which is sorta relevant to this discussion:

MAPI and Entourage
