I finally got The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell book off of my library holds list. It’s in demand!
I’m calling this book “just okay.” In fact, I might go so far as to say I’m disappointed. The problem is some of the key stories, like the New York Crime Wave thing, has been directly discredited by Freakonomics. And I think Freakonomics comes across as more scholarly and credible, frankly. I believe the goal of this book is to talk about how change, or “getting people to do things,” is similar to the way epidemics start, and little things can create big results. In the business world, getting people to do things is the reason for existence, so it’s understandable why this book is an attractive, interesting read. It does cover diffusion theory, which is not a revelation, and I personally have faith in.
The theories here seem…too loosely tied together, though. Would I buy this book? Probably not. I think it is a reflection of its time, and newer stuff in the realm of getting people to do things would be more useful.
Just finished “Blink” and I liked that better. Heard Gladwell speak last year and I enjoyed his nervous almost nerdy like quality….and as far as the book goes well we all know how I feel about first impressions.
Hey, this was more than a first impression…it was several hours of my waking life. I’ll travel around the bookosphere a little bit and maybe get back to Blink. I’ve got a healthy list to get to, in the meantime. Stay tuned!
