Over at the Taj Mahal of blogs there’s a discussion about The Apprentice:

Daniel Brown’s TV Blog: The Apprentice

I count myself as one of the fans of Martha Stewart’s Apprentice. It’s really all about the platitudes and Martha’s are new and fresh. When she said, “I never quit. I went to jail and I didn’t quit” there’s not much The Donald or Carolyn (who is looking and acting very smart these days) can do to top that.

Speaking of Apprentice 1.0, last week’s episode wasn’t disturbing because Donald Trump fired 4 contestants. It was disturbing because of Bill Rancic’s use of the term “step up to the plate” sequentially and repeatedly, throughout the show. I know this show is all about editing, so First, if I were Bill, I might have a short cup of coffee with the editing team because I’m sure he’s got more to give than that.

Second, I think the expression “step up to the plate” has officially jumped the shark, thanks to Bill and his editing team. I assume it is one of those sports analogies that is supposed to be effective in the business world in conveying meaning. It’s really very baby boomer, and that’s not even Bill’s generation. How about something a little more Gen X - Gen Y?

I might suggest the the following instead of “step up to the plate,” like

“Watch MTV Hits” - usage, “She needs to be a leader and move over to MTV Hits instead of that horrid MTV 2″

“drink from the bowl of creme on the table” ( a reference to Madonna in the “Express Yourself” Video)

“If he really wants to be in charge, he should be a man and drink from the bowl of creme on the table.”

He should say, “Why buy the milk when you can get the cow for free?” Even at times when it doesn’t make sense.

Daniel Brown - 02 Nov - 8:47 pm,

I agree that “Step up to the Plate” has jumped the shark, especially on Donald’s Apprentice. When they got rid of Torel all the women said it at least once. Also, I’m totally into Clay.
