One of the coolest things about Microsoft Entourage, the e-mail client for Macintosh, is that it uses WebDAV to access mailboxes, which doesn’t require any tricky VPN or some such thing.

It does not use RPC over HTTP, which is the way that Outlook clients can use a Web-like connection to access mail from outside a firewall:

Exchange Security: Entourage and RPC-over-HTTP

Here’s the problem, though. WebDAV is an Outlook Web access like connection, and Outlook Web access has this “issue,” where, if it is secured properly, will not allow the opening of e-mail with “URL-like” characters in the subject line. This includes things like “&” or “…” or “//” or “::”. So if anyone sends you mail like that, your Entourage client will not pick it up. This is about 5-10% of the e-mail that I get.

More detail here.

Bummer.
